7 Simple Meditation Techniques for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Guide

Updated: Jan 19

Meditation at Home

Take the first step toward inner peace with our easy-to-follow meditation guide. Whether you’re new to meditation or looking to deepen your practice, this guide will help you unlock the benefits of mindfulness—bringing calm, clarity, and balance into your daily life – no matter how busy life gets!

1. Find a Quiet Space:

  • Choose a calm, comfortable spot where you won't be disturbed. This could be a quiet room, a garden, or any peaceful environment. Turn your phone onto silent mode and place faced down so you don’t get distracted.

2. Sit Comfortably:

  • Sit in a comfortable position with your spine straight. You can sit on the floor, a cushion, or a chair. Relax your body, but stay alert. Set a timer for 3 minutes to start with, (that's one less thing to think about!).

3. Start to slow your breath:

  • Take a few moments to ground yourself and get into a slow breathing pattern, I find using a 4-2-4 ratio works best for me. Take a deep breath in through your nose to a slow count of 4, hold your breath to a count of 2, then slowly breath out to a count of 4

4. Focus on Your Breathing:

  • Close your eyes and begin by focusing on your breath. Pay attention to the sensation of air entering and leaving your body. Does it tickle your nose? Place your hand on your belly and feel how it rises and falls. Breathe deeply and naturally, letting your breath guide you into a calm state.

5. Acknowledge Thoughts and Let Them Pass:

  • As you meditate, thoughts will naturally arise. Don’t obsess over what thoughts are appearing, just acknowledge them without judgment. This does take practice so don't be dishearten if it takes a while to get used to. Use a mental ‘swipe’ if it makes it easier. Then gently return your focus to your breathing or your chosen point of focus.

6. Start with Short Sessions:

  • Set a timer and begin with 3-5 minute sessions, gradually increasing the duration as you become more comfortable with the practice. Even a few minutes a day can make a difference.

7. End Gently:

  • When your session is complete, open your eyes slowly. Take a few moments to bring your awareness back to your surroundings. Reflect on how you feel before getting up.

Amplify Your Meditation Journey with Powerful Aids

Incorporating these aids into your meditation practice can enhance the experience, making it more immersive and grounded. I would recommend waiting until you’ve achieved at least 5 minutes of clear meditation before incorporating anything else into your practice.

  • Flower-Embedded Resin Obelisks: These can be placed in front of you as a calming visual focal point. The natural elements within the resin offer a grounding connection to nature, helping you stay present.

  • LED Light Bases: If using obelisks or crystal towers, LED bases can create a soft, ambient glow, enhancing the soothing atmosphere and helping you ease into relaxation.

  • Aromatherapy (Essential Oils or Candles): Lavender, sandalwood, or frankincense are great scents to use during meditation to promote relaxation and clarity. I use these all the time at home.

  • Meditation Music or Sounds: Soft, calming music or nature sounds can be played in the background to deepen the meditative experience. There are lots of ‘spa’ playlists available which are perfect for this.

·       Use a Mantra or Affirmation (Optional): Repeating a positive phrase, affirmation, or sound (like "Om") can help deepen concentration and keep the mind centred.

I particularly like this obelisk for meditation, the cool whites remind me of a snowy plateau and brings calm to my mind. Simple and unfussy, the light infuses beautifully through the space between the flowers.

Meditation is a simple yet powerful way to improve both your mental and physical well-being. With just a few minutes a day, you can reduce stress, boost focus, and cultivate a more balanced life. Remember, it's consistency that matters most—not the length of your practice. Ready to experience the benefits for yourself?
