Unveiling the Trailblazing Women Who Inspire Creativity

With so many incredible women out there, narrowing it down to just three was no easy task! But these women have shaped my creative journey in ways I’ll always be grateful for. Their work embodies resilience, innovation, and a passion for beauty—things I strive to reflect in Mama Pacha every day.

Anna Atkins – The Pioneer of Cyanotypes

Anna Atkins was a true trailblazer. Living just a short distance from Mama Pacha’s hometown, she changed the course of photography and botanical study forever. In 1843, she defied expectations by publishing Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, the first book to use photographic images instead of hand-drawn illustrations. Using the cyanotype process, she meticulously documented botanical specimens, creating stunning blueprints that remain timeless.

Though her work was rooted in science rather than art, her influence can still be seen today in the V&A Museum and The Natural History Museum. Over 180 years later, her legacy continues to inspire me as I craft my own cyanotypes, capturing the delicate beauty of flowers and foliage straight from my garden in Maidstone, Kent.

Beth Chatto – The Queen of ‘Right Plant, Right Place’

Beth Chatto revolutionised gardening with her simple yet powerful philosophy: Right plant, right place. From her breathtaking gardens in Elmstead Market, Essex, she demonstrated how understanding plant ecology could transform landscapes. Her gardens take you on a journey through woodlands, marshes, and arid spaces—each area carefully curated to showcase plants thriving in their natural conditions.

Her books, including The Dry Garden and Beth Chatto’s Woodland Garden, completely changed the way we think about gardening. And while I can only dream of having six acres to play with, I do my best to channel her wisdom in my own little slice of paradise!

Philippa Craddock – The Floral Visionary

Philippa Craddock has reshaped the world of floral design, seamlessly blending traditional techniques with modern aesthetics. Her breathtaking displays for weddings and prestigious events are a true testament to her artistry, and she’s been a huge influence on my own journey with flowers.

At Mama Pacha, every bloom is grown, nurtured, and carefully selected before being preserved in my resin designs—something Philippa’s work first inspired me to explore! Beyond her incredible floral arrangements, she’s also dedicated to sharing her expertise through masterclasses, podcasts, and a wealth of free resources for fellow creatives. I’ve had the privilege of completing both her Floristry Fundamentals and Creative Business Masterclasses, and I can say first-hand just how transformative her teachings are.

It’s incredible to think that one idea sparked by her has shaped the entire direction of Mama Pacha. If you’re a creative looking for inspiration, Philippa’s work is a must-see and her business skills and teachings are second to none.
